Deafness Awareness Training

Baby Sign

Most parents wait until their child can speak before they earnestly begin to focus on two way communication.  However, recent studies indicate that children can absorb and communicate information shortly after birth.   Infants naturally use smiling, cooing, and crying and movement to communicate their needs and feelings so it is rather common for babies to use their hands to communicate, long before they can speak. Both babies and parents are less frustrated if they can use gestures for communicating words like ‘milk’, ‘mum’, ‘dad’, ‘more’, ‘hungry’, ‘hot’ and ‘cold’.

Attending the 8 week Baby Sign classes can give parents skills to connect in a meaningful way with their baby or toddler.

This course teachs basic Auslan key word signs to parents and carers of babies and children who are hearing or deaf, between the ages of 2 months and 5 years.

Courses can be offered in regional areas and tailored to your needs and would require a minimum number of 8 participants.

Please contact us on 07 3892 8500 or email to julie.kirkwood@deafsq.org.au and register your expression of interest at your preferred location.
