The National Relay Services (NRS) is a Federal Government initiative which provides a telephone system for Deaf people and others with hearing or speech difficulties.
There are several ways in which the National Relay Service can help overcome a speech or hearing impairment when using the telephone. In most cases you will need what is known as a TTY or telephone typewriter. This is a telephone with a keyboard and a small display screen for text. It allows the user to type a message of conversation and to read what is being said in reply.
Deaf Services Queensland hosts the Queensland Education and Information Officer (EIO) for the NRS.
The EIO can provide:
Individual training in use of service and TTY
Broader community awareness of NRS
Staff training and information
Information presentations to public and private sector
Feedback for congratulations and complaints
Advice and referral regarding telecommunications
